It is with great sadness that Stephen Horowitz passed away peacefully on 21st August 2026.
Stevie totally embraced both the spirit and ethos of the Club, introduced to it by his close friend Peter Mullen in 1997, and becoming a Member in 1999. For Stevie, riding was always more about taking part than actually competing - that was what the bar was for.
Modest, highly social, multilingual and endlessly engaging, Stevie also possessed a discerning approach to dining, providing a welcome boost to the revenues of the Sunny Bar, Glattfelders, La Barracca and many other favoured establishments.
From his much-loved lodgings at the Suvretta Hotel, he would always enjoy a hearty breakfast before venturing onto the Run - this was famously interrupted just once, on the morning of his inaugural ride from Top - a mistake he was never to repeat!
A consummate host, Stevie delighted in bringing people together, whether at shooting parties in Wiltshire, a BBQ in the garden, or aboard his prized Riva on Lac Leman.
Above all, Stevie was a wonderful husband to Chrissie and proud father to Alexandra, Ella and Harry. He truly embodied the camaraderie, humour and sociability that makes the Club so special. His warmth, generosity and zest for life will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Horowitz name continues at the Cresta through his daughter Ella, herself an active rider, who will no doubt carry forward the family tradition.
A celebration of Stevie’s life will be held at a later date.
