Information for Non-Members (Riders on the Supplementary List)

Although the SMTC is a private Club, non-Members may apply for temporary Membership on the Supplementary List which entitles them to ride in the early mornings on certain days. Groups are not accepted. Details are contained in the Memorandum on Supplementary Membership below.

  • Riders must be aged 18 or over.
  • Women are not permitted to ride the Cresta Run.
  • Once in St. Moritz and before riding, all riders must agree to be bound by the Rules of the Club and will not be permitted to ride unless they have signed the back of their application card before their first ride in a season, accepting the following disclaimer

SL Members are divided into two categories:

  • Beginners are those who have never ridden before. A Beginner may reserve a slot on-line for his first day of riding; however this does not constitute an agreement to ride as that can only be entered into in St. Moritz.
  • SL Riders (or ‘SLs’) are those who have had the Beginners’ Course, are not Members of the SMTC, and are returning to ride, either in the same season in which they were Beginners, or in subsequent seasons.

All SL Members, both Beginners and those who have ridden before, are advised to arrange insurance before arriving. EU Nationals are strongly advised to carry an EHIC card in addition to having adequate insurance which covers the Cresta Run. Details of the insurance available at the Clubhouse and how to get an EHIC card are shown below,

The Cresta Run is open (weather permitting) for SL Members on most weekdays from just before Christmas until the end of February, except on race days (normally one day a week and weekends). We hold School for Beginners on most practice days, but please note that both Beginners and SL Riders (i.e. those who have ridden before) should allow at least THREE practice days in order to ensure achieving 5 rides. The calendar for next season can be seen on the Races and Events page. Select the relevant year and month to view the fixture card.

Riding fees are shown below.

Potential Beginners and SL Riders should be aware that none will be accepted during the AGM week (normally mid- February), when SL riding will be restricted to individuals such as sons or guests of Members who have come from afar. It may be necessary to apply the same restriction to SL riding during the University event, except for those taking part in the event.

Attendance figures over recent Winters indicate that there are no particular periods to obtain the maximum number of rides, except that Beginners would do best to come in Junction season.

Dress: wear warm, tough clothing, and bring gloves and goggles. We provide the rest of the riding equipment and tuition.

The Club does not arrange transport to, or accommodation in St Moritz.

Applications for Supplementary Membership
5.

Once in St. Moritz and before riding, all riders must agree to be bound by the Rules of the Club and will not be permitted to ride unless they have signed the back of their application card before their first ride in a season, accepting the following:

“Whether as a Member or as a SL rider I ride the Cresta Run because I freely choose to do so. I do so as an individual and do not regard the arrangement whereunder I do so as a commercial or business arrangement.

“I acknowledge that tobogganing on this Run is dangerous. I willingly accept the risk that I may suffer injury in using the Run. I acknowledge that, if that should happen, no liability will attach to the Club, its officers, servants, agents or its contractors or to any other rider using the Run. I acknowledge that this exclusion of liability extends to all accidents relating to the use of the Run even if any of the aforesaid has been at fault.

“I acknowledge that such exclusion of liability extends to all errors of design, construction and manufacture, to all equipment used or provided for use on the Run and to all aspects of the operation, management and use of the Run.

I use the Run as a consequence of my own choice and decision and I have taken the opportunity (or do not wish to take the opportunity) to familiarise myself with such risks as I take and dangers as I may face.

“I also acknowledge that legal proceedings of any kind arising out of my use of the Run shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Swiss Courts and to the principles and processes of Swiss Law. That applies equally to any dispute arising with the Club or its officers, servants or employees or other riders and to all legal processes arising out of my use of the Run whether they be in contract, tort, delict or otherwise howsoever.

“In acknowledging that I visit and use the Run entirely at my own risk and that neither the Club nor any of its officers, servants or agents or its contractors or any other rider shall be under any liability whatsoever to me, I undertake both for myself and for my heirs and dependants and for my successors that neither I nor they will make any claim against the Club, its officers, servants,  agents or contractors or such other rider whether for death, personal injury or otherwise arising out of my use of the Run as a result of anything done or that may have been omitted to be done and which affects that use of the Run.”

EHIC Card
6.

All EU Nationals should carry an EHIC card. The card is extremely easy to apply for on-line. This European Commission website page gives links to all the appropriate EU member states’ sites. UK residents can apply direct here: . The card is not a substitute for travel/accident insurance. It will not cover private medical care, repatriation, helicopter/mountain rescue, theft or loss, to give some examples, but should be used in conjunction with appropriate insurance.

Insurance
7.

By signing the application for SL Membership a rider accepts that he uses the Run entirely at his own risk and he agrees that the Club is under no responsibility for injuries to riders, who should be insured, nor for damage to or loss of his personal property.

2012/13 Season
Riders of all nationalities may purchase insurance at the Clubhouse. It is made available by the Club for the benefit of those who have arrived at the Cresta without proper insurance, and who do not wish to delay riding while they investigate alternatives. The Club is paid a commission by the insurers for the work involved, but the Club does not act for individuals taking out the insurance, and owes no duty to such individuals. The Club gives no assurances, and makes no representations, as to the merits of the Policy, and has no responsibility to a rider in respect of any uninsured or unpaid claim.

In particular it should be noted:

  1. It is Accident, not Travel insurance. It will not cover, for example, cancellation, delay, loss/theft of personal baggage etc.
  2. It will only cover the Cresta Run, Bobsleigh and Skeleton. It will not cover any other winter sport (e.g. ski-ing, snowboarding, ice-skating, lang-lauf, etc).
  3. It is only available for those aged 16-69. (Those aged 65-69 must pay a double premium).
  4. All UK riders should carry an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).
  5. In the event of a possible claim, riders must contact the specialist assistance providers prior to incurring costs.
  6. There are limits both in the period of time allowed for, and the expense of, follow-up treatment once a rider has returned home.
  7. Standard conditions also apply. (e.g. pre-existing conditions not advised, influence of drugs/alcohol voiding cover, etc)
  8. The insured rider remains directly liable for any bills which are not paid by the insurers.

To take out insurance at the Clubhouse, see Richard Robbins or Harriet Brabazon when registering.

14. If at any time during the season the Secretary is of the opinion that the conduct of an SL Member is, or may ben, such as to be injurious to the iinterests or reputation of the Club, or incosistent with his status as a temporary member, the Secretary may forthwith terminate his SL Membership.
